I take issue with Jay's statement that "no nation on earth has a record of commitment to free speech to match the United States." While no nations's record is perfect, the US has a recent history of the press being consistently and increasingly being bought out and owned (yes, even the internet) by corporate america. this has Drastically reduced the amount and quality of Free Speech. today the US government is more concerned about protecting monied interests than it is in protecting the rights and interests of its or the world's people. So the UN apple has a bad spot in the "Oil for Food" program; probably more. How many fiascos has the US government had when it comes to being bought out by corporate interests? It's arguable that the US was the original bad apple that spoiled the whole barrel.

"I may have this wrong at a tech level but my sense is that unless particular nations were willing to actually filter their citizens net use - which many are already doing - to allow access to only the UN domain, the two systems could co-exist."

I doubt that most people would bother registering with the alternate domain. People have tried to set up alternate root servers before, but to no avail. Besides, no matter how much everyone hates Americans, they're always happy to get their hands on US currency, aren't they?
