As I recall, he (correctly) pointed out that “homosexual” is an adjective, and the noun should be “homosexualist”. I think that’s pretty funny.

i don’t feel i’m being quite fair to Muggeridge…his multivolume autobiography ‘chronicles of wasted time’ is fascinating reading…he had quite the long varied life i must say…he moved to bowen island in the late 80’s or early 90’s….dear old doug collins(my fellow Kinsellanemesis) made a pilgrimage there….i remember he called him st. muggs…

and vidal’s article in the much lamented ‘old’ esquire mag(with gingrich and l rust hills at the helm) on ‘why i can’t apologize to wfbuckleyjr.” is in way of being the most devastating character assassination i can recall….by the final para. you came to believe that there truly IS something fundamentally wrong with buckley’s personality.

ah!..L rust hills…now THERE was an editor and a writer…his very pores exuded irony and tristesse…if you can find his stories on retirement…called ‘LOMLICDAT ‘standing for ‘lonely old man lives in cottage drives ancient truck’ you would understand how important it is to have an aim…a purpose…other people…a dog ferkrissakes even…anything other than simply the self…he could lay all the terminal existentialism on you one could stomach and yet have you laffing like a drain.

having said that i’m afraid gore is an exceedingly bright fool….and wfbuckleyjr. the kind of man every fortunate state deserves….i’d buy them both dinner.

actually gore vidal refers to himself as a faggot.

and oddly enough though i find his politics very deeply dim stuff i’ve always trememndously enjoyed reading his journalism and listening to his debating.

i remember him referring to malcolm muggeridge as a ‘bright fool’...that description really couldn’t be improved on.

Buckley claimed he went to finishing school with God so most of what he says has “celectial reasoning” attached to it…I don’t know if Buckley was just an eastern establishment fop spewing middle class reasoning to placate some guilt over his birth right or whether he was truly inspired and deeply concerned with the plight of middle America…in any event, I will always remember him as being the first pundit to observe the mutation of the American left into statist corporatism.
