The more I find out about the guy -- I'm about a third of the way through Dreams from My Father right now -- the less likely I think it is that he'll be president.

But who knows -- times change.

Jay, I respectfully disagree.

I don't think Obama will gain credit by walking. In fact, I think he'd (a) piss off his supporters, many of whom butted heads against the party brass when Clinton looked inevitable, and (b) set himself up for years as the guy who walked away from a fight, even when it looked like he could win it.

If HillBilly & Co. snatch the nomination, then I think Obama's set up well for '12 or '16, as the case may be, although of course a lot of things could happen in the interim.

As much as I'd like to believe otherwise, I'm still forced to conclude, as of now, that if the Democratic nastiness wraps up by June or so, there's still plenty of time to fix the internal damage and take on McCain.

Not to say Obama would necessarily win in November - his limitations are still out there and they haven't been fixed, in my own opinion - but if he loses, it won't necessarily be as a result of the Demo civil war. (He does need to encourage some of his supporters, like the one you cited, to STFU.)
