The Delight of the Commons
March 28, 2007 |
One of the greater pleasures of Victoria is a blustery day at the beach in the company of my little boys. The wind howls, we climb rocks and count waves and find sea glass. For two hours we did this and then it was time to leave. We climbed the cliff and there, free for the taking if one is to believe Sam, my six year old, were rafts of daffodils. What better present for mum?
So, off they went. My theory was that half a dozen of about a gazillion would not be missed. Sam’s theory was that they were free. Max’s three year old mind cut to the chase: if mum would like one she would love one or two more than one…His current idea of a big number is 18. They got to work.

At 18 it became a bit embarrassing; but Sam, having read his Paddington is a boy for “good value” and beautiful flowers for mum for free is the best value there is. Max acted as daffodil caddy.
We now have Spring on our dining room table.
