Our Guy
Brooks has a story of a Canadian who has been arrested on his way home from Afghanistan in Dubai. Bert Tatham, apparently, had a dried poppy head and 6/10s of a gram of has stuck to the seam of his pants.
This is where out diplomats and External Affairs wallahs earn their salaries. He’s our guy. He needs to be back in Canada.
Now.
So grease the palms, use the back channels, have the PM call the Sultan…whatever it takes.
Bert Tatham needs to be home.

Quite naturally, Bert Tatham’s parents are not impressed with the relative inactivity of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs in trying to get Bert extricated from his now four years in jail for the offence he committed in Dubai.
Bert, it seems, cannot count. Dubai has a ‘zero tolerance’ position on illicit drugs…don’t ya know? Bert’s 6/10th of a gram does not equal zero: so go straight to jail and do not pass ‘GO’!
Bert was unfortunate enough to select the UN to actually go work for. I was under the impression that just everyone on this little planet knows that the UN is dysfunctional…..oh!….sorry! Maybe that is WHY Bert went to work there…..did not think of that….in Afghanistan you say?! Do they not grow poppies there….like a LOT of poppies? Isn’t that the place where half the adult population uses dope? I thought that they had been doing that since the Creation…but here comes Bert leading the UN conversion gang. Just who is converting whom here?
Looks like Bert is gonna have 4 years in Dubai without the exposure to dope of any kind. That should give hime time to, at the very least, improve his maths skills and understand that 0.6g opium does not = zero!
