Nothing if not consistent
May 29, 2006 |
A little while ago I wondered what Chapters/Indigo would do with the new Harpers which carries all 12 of the infamous Danish cartoons. I needed have….They banned the issue. Which has the virtue of consistency. In effect Heather is not going to let you see those cartoons in her shop no matter what…
In a memo obtained by The Globe and Mail that was e-mailed to Indigo managers yesterday about “what to do if customers question Indigo’s censorship” of Harper’s, employees are told to say that “the decision was made based on the fact that the content about to be published has been known to ignite demonstrations around the world. Indigo [and its subsidiaries] Chapters and Coles will not carry this particular issue of the magazine but will continue to carry other issues of this publication in the future.”

So we now know that if material “has been known to cause demonstrations around the world” Heather is not going to carry it. It is an interesting criteria for censorship. Don’t write anything provocative enough to have people come into the streets or, boom, out you go.
