Making Friends and Influencing People

The president of Iran again lashed out at Israel on Friday and said it was “heading toward annihilation,” just days after Tehran raised fears about its nuclear activities by saying it successfully enriched uranium for the first time.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a “permanent threat” to the Middle East that will “soon” be liberated. He also appeared to again question whether the Holocaust really happened.

“Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation,” Ahmadinejad said at the opening of a conference in support of the Palestinians. “The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm.”

No doubt this can be dismissed as posturing and just the sorrt of thing which Iranian Presidents are expected to say at conferences on Palestine. But if you really want to give people a good reason to start dusting off contingency plans this is exactly the rhetoric which will do it.

Certainly if I was an Israeli politician or general or intelligence chap I would have no choice but to take these statements very seriously indeed.

This is so very tiring. And expensive.

But I suppose that we’ve got little choice.

That’s the big question, isn’t it. When an obvious loon in charge of an authoritarian country says that he is going to murder all the Jews he can get his hands on, just as soon as he can, do you a) believe him, or b) go with Robert McClelland and friends and assume he is just blowing smoke?

I would tend to go with b), but since rightwingers have already invested so much money in adult diapers to handle the hysterical incontinence, go with a).

Now, if there were only some way to get the Imperial power to stop manipulating the politics and the security of the Middle East (for the control of a strategic resource, as has been the case with Iran beginning in 1953)....
