Last Week of Summer
August 27, 2007 |
I always feel the snap of Fall around the 15th of August when the nights cool down and the days begin to end early. But years of school imprinted the idea that the last week of Summer is the week before Labour Day. It is also the real end of the year in many ways.
The fresh start that the beginning of the school year offers is always exciting. But so is the sense of wanting to make the most of the fading sunlight and the slower pace of summer.
I have not been wring much here this summer. Partly because I have been busy elsewhere but also because I wanted to spend some time reflecting on some fairly interesting political cultural changes which I have been noticing but not quite understanding. Which reflection is likely to take this blog in a somewhat different direction.

Prima facie thisappears to be an illegal ad in Canada. In Canada, spooked by the unknown nature of emergent reproductive technology, the feds made virtually every assisted reproductive technique either illegal or subject to strict regulation. And they made any more than token compensation for out of pocket expenses for egg donors illegal.
There is just one problem: the net means that the ability to control such activity or the advertisement of such activity has pretty much vanished. And this changes a lot of our assumptions about the nature of the state and the nature of sovereignty.
