James Hansen’s Boss on AGW

Theon declared “climate models are useless.” “My own belief concerning anthropogenic climate change is that the models do not realistically simulate the climate system because there are many very important sub-grid scale processes that the models either replicate poorly or completely omit,” Theon explained. “Furthermore, some scientists have manipulated the observed data to justify their model results. In doing so, they neither explain what they have modified in the observations, nor explain how they did it. They have resisted making their work transparent so that it can be replicated independently by other scientists. This is clearly contrary to how science should be done. Thus there is no rational justification for using climate model forecasts to determine public policy,” he added. watts up with that

As the wheels fall off the global warming bus questions are raised about the driver….by his boss.

Jay: I am in the process of “discussing” this at SDA. However I don’t think it is too much to ask for the data that he uses to make this statement (after all I have agreed a number of times that data should be available and science should be open). Lacking that it is just a vague appeal to authority that should carry no consequence.

Let me try it from this angle. Hey there is someone at NASA who thinks that the basic science on AGW is correct. Now, do you believe me?

    John

    John,

You miss the point. You have to prove Global Warming rather than Theon having to prove the reverse.

DDT: I would say that you have missed the point. I was not trying to prove global warming with my statement above, only why we should not accept Theon statement as scientifically valid. It is the opinion of a layman that should not carry any more weight than a statement from me. In the end, all that matters is what science can show.

    John

“Retired senior NASA atmospheric scientist, Dr. John S. Theon” does not sound like your typical layman to me.

And here, based on his knowledge as an atmospheric scientist, “the models do not realistically simulate the climate system because there are many very important sub-grid scale processes that the models either replicate poorly or completely omit.”

That would appear to me to be a potentially valid, scientific, criticism of the current state of AGW models.

This has nothing to do with saving the plant but everything about liberals gaining more and more control of the economy. Think of how many votes politicians could buy and how many people they could make dependant on the government with billions in additional tax revenue? This is just another in long line of man-made, media driven crisis’s to create a sense of panic so we’ll willingly allow the government to save us from ourselves through regulations and taxation.

There’s no need to stop carbon emissions because we’ll all be dead from the cancer we’re going to get because of the thinning ozone. Or will it be the impending ice age that does us in? Perhaps it will be the population bomb and we’ll all starve. Maybe we’ll all be dead from the latest disease (a super SARS, avian flu?). I can’t keep up!

Killer Bees and Acid Rain get us before the population bomb.

Jay: why do you say it is a valid criticism? Let me see the research that allows him to say that. Unless he can it is an appeal to authority and I have never put a lot of stock in those (from anyone).

    John

The plot thickens. The wonders of the internet! Some people have started to check the accuracy of the claims. What I found interesting was that he resigned from NASA over 10 years ago.

    John.

Somewhere in the link above, it stated that Theon was last at NASA ‘94. When your commenting on supercomputer generated climate models, that’s ancient history.
