Man how did I miss the Vegas Pin Ups?

    Vargas, dammit.

But what I can’t seem to grasp is what defines the genre, although genre it assuredly is. “Soft-core pr0n” doesn’t seem to capture it.

Truth is, I don’t find any of these pics remotely a turn-on. I’m just jaded, I guess.

Vegas has produced more than its fair share of pinups.

It is actually an interesting question Dawg. My own sense, and the sense I bring to shooting this sort of photo, is an evocation of a particular time and sensibility. Basically a moment where it was still possible to be “a little bit naughty” but where everything else had to proceed by way of implication and suggestion.

I am not sure the pics were supposed to be a “turn on”; rather they were intended to remind men of what lovely, mysterious and complex creatures women were and, I would argue, still are.

As anyone who surfs the net knows, there is so much flesh on the net – pr0n, softcore, the Huffington Post’s obsession with nipple slips, celebrity sites….- that the entire idea of restraint and implication has been largely lost. These pics sometimes, if the light is just right and the model just knowing enough, are a faint echo of that sensibility.

“jaded.” Well that’s one word for it. They’ve got pills for that now, you know.

And he meant vegas, dumbass. Do try to keep up. (heh, see what I did there?)

Your very presence is wrecking this dawg. Can’t you go dig up some fake indian burial grounds or go recycle something and leave us cool people alone? Please?? the last thing this thread needs is some “jaded” puritanical commie adding his usual nothing to the mix.

seriously Jay, I don’t want to play this if I’m gonna have to deal with Mr. Bring Down.

I mean jeezus, you see a half naked woman and your reaction is to wrinkle your brow over “genre”??

    You are so pathetic.

Kathy, you are a lot of things, but “cool” simply isn’t one of them. You’ll just have to trust me on that.

Maybe I just don’t like the skinny ones—or over-the-hill five-foot midgets, for that matter. Chacun à son gout. Or maybe I just like to cut to the chase. More likely, though, we’ve all moved on since the pinup days, or most of us have, and the genre survives only as a rather odd form of kitsch.

Jay, I’m not sure I understand this: Basically a moment where it was still possible to be “a little bit naughty” but where everything else had to proceed by way of implication and suggestion. Indeed, pinups were both, were they not?

I do like your plunge into retro, though. You’re much cooler than I thought, more so by far than that odious product of nun-whippings now trying, out of necessity, to project her sexuality by proxy.

    meow! Settle down ladies.

Dawg…must you nettle over everything? We all understand your enlightened adherence to androgynous progressiveness. But sometimes a pretty girl isn’t really so offensive.

And sometimes it’s all just in good fun and isn’t necessarily worthy of all this silly hand-wringing.

Dr Dawg is like that one dinner guest who always stops the conversation just when it’s getting interesting because “I don’t think we should talk about such things at the dinner table.”

I know Jay encourages debate and contrary opinion, but this is ridiculous. This is a pleasant diversion, do you really have nothing better to do than be critical of it, Dawg? That’s really pathetic.

While I’m inclined to be a little more… delicate in my choice language than Kathy is, I must agree with her sentiments!

You let him get to you Kathy.

I found his comment odd too, as well as most of his attitudes, but when you wrestle with him, both will get dirty and he will like it. He is too old now for you, or anyone, to change.

Regarding the sexy….and classy pinups, wise women know the most sensual of all lies in a mans imagination. Show it all and you not only remove your advantage, but his respect in the process.

“Show it all and you not only remove your advantage, but his respect in the process.”

Hmmm…depends on the circumstances. Sometimes it can double the advantage and, depending on how things proceeed, it can even increase respect.

Dawg wouldn’t know cool if he tripped over some in the street. He could probably suck half the cool out of a Harley just by standing next to it.

    He’s like a minivan.

Jay, your presenting of yourself as right wing/conservative/libertarian is getting really, really old.

You voted NDP just last month, you’ve had a hate on for Harper and the Conservatives for 4 years now, you are pals with the absolute worst members of the far, far left…seriously man, give it up. You’re a really, really left wing dude, OK? Get that?

You are also an admitted open immigration supporter.

Normal men don’t leave political parties in a huff over gay marriage, as you did. Normal men care about deficits and human rights commissions (before it becomes trendy to do so) and pogey and immigration and defense – you know, man stuff.

To me, you represent the worst of Canada, an utterly perverse ethos which says love your enemy and hate your friends and family and allies. By all means continue being the ultra left wing guy that you are – we don’t expect any more from “men” from your generation – but please, show a little honesty with self and others and join the NDP and Progressive blog rolls and declare your true left wing colours.

To the 19th commenter, I think Jay has always been up front that he’s open to debate from both sides. There are many sharper leaning right wing blogs to choose from if this one isn’t a fit. Ones that are less open to disenting veiws. I think Jay has more than stood his ground on his beleifs, and stood by his friends on the right, even if opens him up to outright hostility from the left. At the same time, his blog is one of the few where both sides can come together and actually talk. Sometimes the comments (And content) are prickly , and heated arguements ensue. Other times, it allows both sides to stretch a bit and have dynamic debate. Sometimes it’s just fun and light with dueling pin ups. Jay walks the walk on free speech, and sometimes that makes both sides uncomfortable.

. . . In the meantime, Kathy, would you accept an outside contribution to your pin-up collection?

What happened to all your pin ups Kathy? Didn’t have time to read all this, but will later…however, I loved the pics…I’m not gay, a woman and love, love, love cheesy pin ups…... the sexy look of the preceeding decades…beats the vegetarian hairy legged pale pasty looking women with no deodorant and loose fitting really cheap printed fabrics that don’t show the stains from all the veggies purchased at the organic food markets…in their easy comfort sandles with no polish on their fungasidic toes…

    Put back the pin ups…...

    Love your blog…read it…must send more money…

Number 21 said: “Jay walks the walk on free speech, and sometimes that makes both sides uncomfortable.”

I fell asleep three times reading your astonishingly boring soft, flowery woman speak response, but I did catch this part.

Jay supported the conviction of David Ahenakew on “hate speech” charges. He supports “hate speech” laws and that itself is wholly irreconcilable with being a free speecher. He is no such thing.

Look, the only reason why I’m here is because I read Kathy Shaidle’s blog and now she’s bitching about how conservative men are such pansies. Jay makes us look bad and it is entirely cricket that I present a more accurate summation of his political orientation so we conservatives don’t get a bad name from his idiocy, such as palling around with the reprehensible Dr. Dawg, as vicious a Marxist as exists in Canada.

Jay, please, I’m begging you, come clean with yourself and others and admit you are left wing. You voted NDP just last month, and not for the first time I’m guessing, that should be more than enough.

I have nothing personal against you, I’m just a regular joe who thinks we conservatives, especially conservative men, have enough problems to deal with and we don’t need to be getting heat because some gay marriage obsessed boomer is selling himself as a conservative and acting like an idiot. By all means continue palling around with Canada’s most vicious Marxist and supporting “hate speech” laws, but please cut the false flag bullshit and come clean about your politics.

Just to show I’m not a complete dick, I will tip my hat to you for you posting my previous comment, most people wouldn’t have and I didn’t expect it, thank you. Have a great weekend, I sure as hell am going to.

“You are also an admitted open immigration supporter.

Normal men don’t leave political parties in a huff over gay marriage, as you did.”

Oh Dear. You might want to take a look at my gay marriage posts. You can search them. Much to my friend Kathy’s chargrin I have been a supporter of gay marriage from the get go.

As for open immigration, a simple search would confirm that I am absolutely opposed to open immigration and would prefer a very much more selective system.

As for David Ahenakew, I supported stripping the crazy old guy of his Order of Canada. I can’t imagine how his idiotic comments could be construed as violating the Criminal Code and, frankly, have seriousl issues with the current Criminal Code wording on “hate speech”.

You might want to spend a few minutes with the search tool before you trot out your sort of loony CPC views.

Old news now, since Arnie’s temporary ban was in place for two or three days, but:

This is a pleasant diversion, do you really have nothing better to do than be critical of it, Dawg?

Gawrd, the defensiveness here is amazing. I’m not critical of it in the least. I’m just interested in it. Or, more accurately, interested in the interest. Get a grip.

I thought the point here was to go retro—nothing remotely wrong in that. The fact that the pics do nothing more for me than, say, ladies’ underwear ads in a Sears’ catalogue is irrelevant. They’re cultural artefacts, whose meaning has changed over time. Sorry to murder to dissect. It’s the academic in me.

Jay, you’re no leftist, by the way. Keep your distance. :)
