It means if you’re a Liberal looking to escape from the coalition — and virtual extinction at the next election — Iggy’s not your boy. He is implicated up to his ears, only without even the virtue of conviction. When the Tories come to remind voters, as they will, who tried to “steal” the election, who was “in bed with the separatists,” who would have let Jack Layton loose in the cabinet, they will make Iggy wear it just as surely as they would Rae or Dion. andrew coyne
As predicted the “Coalition” has become unstuck and now is beginning to work its magic on the Liberal Party. Dion is to be gone by Christmas. His leadership is done. But as Coyne points out, Iggy never directly said the Coalition was a bad idea. So when the election comes the CPC will be perfectly able to tar him with the Coalition brush.
This really is working out better than Harper had any right to expect.

It’s looking right now like Ignatieff is a better coup leader than Dion was—he’s just rolled the Liberal Party.

“Michael Ignatieff appears poised to become federal Liberal leader on Wednesday with the support of a majority of Grit MPs and senators.
But his chief rival, Bob Rae, is not going down without a fight. He’s challenging the legitimacy of a leadership process that excludes tens of thousands of rank and file Liberals.”
Gee, Bob, sure sucks to be on the wrong end of a coup, doesn’t it?

Harper may not have been able to predict the exact outcome of his announcement to eliminate taxpayer funding of political parties; however, I would hazard a guess that Harper knew that the outcome would be to his advantage and to the Liberal’s disadvantage. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the Liberals would respond if their financial lifeline were threatened—-especially given the Liberal’s sad financial state of affairs. Harper knew that the already badly damaged Liberal “engine” would choke and fall apart under the extra strain. No one should EVER underestimate the tactical brilliance of Stephen Harper. To be honest, Canadians don’t deserve such a good Prime Minister…they certainly don’t appreciate him—-Conservatives and Liberals alike.
