Explain to me why we have zoos again..
Utterly adorable and thanks to LGF for posting the elephant with the ball. But I cannot help but wonder how the blue ball makes up for the dank prison in Oregon, many miles from where this baby should be living.

Jay: that is an argument that I can really see both sides of. A part of me agrees it would be happier in the jungle. However part of me realizes that it will get good care where it is with lots of company and not have to worry about – at the end of its life – being pulled apart by jackals (since I know you have a fondness for that animal). Gerald Durrell made a good argument about this in one of his books.
I do hope that it has a better enclosure when it grows up a little.

John: Ok, but are we doing this to stop it from being eaten by jackals? Or for our entertainment and edification? Not being eaten by jackals is a side issue – but given a choice, I’d trade getting eaten by jackals at the end for freedom throughout my life. Not that elephants probably put it that way.
