Ed steps up

“In the years that I have served in the (legislature), I don’t know if there was another issue that’s drawn such angry response from Albertans,” Stelmach said Tuesday afternoon. The premier has been representing rural residents in and around Vegreville since 1993.

....

“Let’s put Canada first…. Allow the prime minister to deliver the budget, and then have a vote of confidence,” Stelmach said, adding there should not be a vote of confidence on the fiscal update delivered last week.

“Traditionally we have a vote of confidence on a budget, not an economic statement, but a budget.” edmonton journal

“There is an Anger in this Land” wrote my old prof Keith Spicer. (The poor man had no clue there was life beyond Spadina until he came out West. He got a clue rather quickly.) Ed Stelmach is hardly a blod and guts Alberta separatist. But he is hearing from Albertans.

Now the bright bulbs in Ottawa will say, “Well, that’s just Alberta and they are in the tank with Harper”. So let’s see what else happens.

Are you suggesting if there is a snap election and the liberals and dippers divide the ridings and win a coalition majority confirming Canada is a centre-left land… that Albertan complaining will stop? Promise??? Boy, that alone would be worth it.

Sounds very much like, “please give Harper a do-over”.

That some Albertans are angry is clearly true. I don’t even raise the topic when I call home.

I cannot recall a time when individuals of either political stripe were so dismissive of opposing points of view. Proponents of this coalition who refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy issues that it entails lose all credibility in the discussion in my view. Opponents of the coalition who deny the role that Harper has had in its occurance are almost as bad(although frankly much more rare than the former).

Given that this is an extreme set of circumstances, surely it is appropriate to provide Canadians some time to digest the issues before rushing headlong into action which may very well be extremely damaging to the economy never mind our democracy.
