CPC=Wimps
Gee that Chris Reid guy sure is crazy…just read what he wrote on his blog before stepping down as a CPC candidate:
* “A man with a knife was able to go on a murderous rampage decapitating a fellow human being. The rest of the bus was unarmed and helpless. What was the generous Canadian thing to do? Help a fellow human being? No. Flee in terror. Passengers and the bus driver stood by and watched another person being butchered, and couldn’t muster up any courage or self sacrifice to intervene. This is where socialism as gotten us folks, a castrated effeminate population. This is a perfect example of why we need concealed-carry handgun legislation in this country, so we can defend one another and deter horrible events such as this. But what are our politicians talking about? More government regulation and security.” * “I do know the one main issue that stands in the way of a consumer driven health care system is the Canada Health Act. However, courts in Quebec have concluded that people cannot be barred from purchasing their own health care. I wonder if a similar challenge in Ontario would yield a similar result?” * “What bothers me about these perpetually aggrieved people is their obsession with wanting to stay victims so they can tell other people to fix their problems.” * “A flax income tax, or better yet, eliminate personal and business income taxes all together, and just have a consumption tax to promote investing which would raise people’s living standards.” * “Allow law abiding citizens who are qualified and trained to carry concealed handguns for personal protection. It’s the only proven way to reduce violent crime and murder. If women and gays really wanted to stop being victims of hate crimes, they’d be in support of this, but judging from discussions, they’d rather be helpless and rely on government.” * “The reality is that McQuaig wants Canada to do badly, because the worse Canada does, the more books she will sell. Despite her emotional rhetorical skills, she is getting rich by exploiting the deaths of our soldiers.” * “What I found [my fellow gays] to tolerate is promoting promiscuity, drug usage, and prostitution.”
(five feet of fury)
Now I happen to disagree with Chris Reid on guns as I really don’t think they solve a lot of problems; however, it is a mark of Harper’s cringe in the face of the TO media that Chris was required to “resign” as a CPC candidate.

You can’t be serious. You really think this yahoo would have made a good MP?

Actually, the only quoted Chris Reid post I found offensive was regarding the bus passengers, even though I actually don’t disagree with his general points.
Just that the bus situation makes a bad example for his general case about gutlessness and concealed-carry by unfairly condemning the survivors for their decision to just get away alive before doing anything to aid the first (and only consequent) victim. From what I read, the unfortunate victim of this attack was toast pretty much from the get-go but in any case, the passengers were psychologically ambushed (from the midst of the mind-numbing boredom and day-dreaming—or outright nodding off—that only a bus ride provides) by a scene of astonishingly bloody brutality.
They preserved themselves and, with additional bystander aid, contained the threat. They actually did just fine considering the appalling circumstances and they don’t deserve to be criticized.
Especially since no-one had a gun. Chris was right about that.
Otherwise, what was the problem with Chris’s positions? He seems pretty Big-C conservative appropriate to me.

We live in a bizzaro world when a Conservative will fire a gay for being “outted” as a pro-civilian firearms supporter…for wanting to decriminalize armed self defense…freakish behaviour by a conservative party to say the least.

Dawg, I’ve no idea if he would have been a good MP. But I have little time for a party which forces out people with mildly dissident opinions.
Ron, I have the pleasure of the “Loser Cruiser” once every couple of weeks to Vancouver. I hit it at 6:00AM – not my personal best time – and check the situation. I have a wee piece of rebar in the bottom of my briefcase and several other potential weapons. I have had since 9/11.
The reality is that we all need to be ready. The folks on the bus weren’t. They were sheep. Like the boys at college confronted by a wee Middle Eastern woman hater.
Which was Chris’s point and which should be the CPC’s.

I have no problems with that.
Well, except that it might be difficult to dig through yer paperwork getting to the rebar if trouble suddenly appears. Especially if it’s aimed at you first. “Hang tuff while I get ready…” likely won’t do for that kind of occasion.
Kevlar is your friend. ;-)

No offense Dawg – well, maybe some offense – but your opinions are the last ones that Stephen Harper should be listening to when choosing his candidates. You are neither base nor potential supporter, and from what I can tell, this move has backfired with everyone but the party hacks and residual Red Tories. Once more, I have to swallow hard and hold onto my inner realist (he shares a place with the inner cynic) when I vote.

What’s wrong with the Canadian way… ie, lodging a written (non-double-sided-faxed) complaint with your local Diversity Tribunal, which will promptly depute a Grievance Mediator to hold a joint Conciliation Hearing with the knife-wielding person of psychopathy? Canada’s Human Rights bodies have, after all, single-handedly defeated a veritable Wehrmacht of armed, dangerous, millions-strong neo-Nazis. You think they can’t take down the occasional lone nutter?

But yeah, I do concede Dawg’s point – this Reid fellow can’t match the mental suppleness, rigorous analysis and innovative thought processes of – say – an Avi Lewis, so maybe he shouldn’t be handed a well-paid sinecure on the taxpayer’s teat.

but surely it is up to the voters to decided if he would make a good MP, there are plenty of nutters on the left as well writing weird blog stuff.

I had an interesting conversation with a little old lady about the Greyhound murder – her comments said in amazement were “where were the men on that bus?!” While I believe that women could also have helped, I think she was right – men (who in most cases are stronger and bigger than women) no longer think it is part of their job in society to protect others. How sad.

“Rebar” won’t stop a .40 hollowpoint fired from an illegal hand gun, and Kevlar can be shredded with a box cutter or penetrated with a hunting knife or ice pick and neither “defense” provides for multiple attackers. A rape whistle would be just as effective against the immediate deadly force of an armed criminal attack.
You need to realistically reconsider your preparedness planning and mentally run some real world armed criminal attack scenarios, taken from police files, where there was a successful civilian defense. In almost every case I think you’ll find the successful defense is an equal or more powerful defensive response. ;-)

jeez Dawg, what are you doing here, wasting your time? Those damn unmarked graves aren’t gonna discover themselves!
Seriously: is that your final answer? “Yahoo”? Really??
September 22nd, 2008 at 10:29 am
WL: yes, but full 16th century Maximilian armour, while stylish, is uncomfortable on long bus rides—especially over Kevlar undies—and there are laws against carrying maces and flails.
Pity.

men (who in most cases are stronger and bigger than women) no longer think it is part of their job in society to protect others
The Dixie Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl” and Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” convinced us it was actually us men who need the protection ourselves.
But if you want to make my breakfast, clean my laundry and dust the house, maybe we can talk about it.

This is a great loss. Reid would have filled an important gap in the CPC caucus, which has no shortage of blowhard assholes, but a definite shortage of gay blowhard assholes.
Then again, he had a better chance of getting hit by a falling planet than getting elected in Trinity-Spadina.

Now that Scott has defected to the Libs.

I agree with your post completely. At Ezra’s Blog, been saying this for months now since no action on the CHRC’s. Not even an encouraging word or whispered utterance.
This will have wide implications out West. We have tried the party route twice now. Both have come up snake eye’s. This Nation just gets more oppressive by the week. There are only 2 options open to us now that we see a political system in degeneracy. One, join the States, or form our own Republic. The cultural divide has become almost insurmountable. When a people have no voice ever , what are they to do?
I started to doubt the CPC when they did not rescind the gun registry. Something his base fought for. I am becoming of the opinion he is an Easterner at heart. Just a Koo-Koo egg planted in the West. I gave him a year to see some action. So far very little in overt action, long on platitudes. I don’t think a majority will change that. He is now Ottawashed as we say in Alberta. This carbon plan of his is just a little less worse than Dion’s. It’s a shameful tax grab. Shame on him for even suggesting he s an Albertan if he ever was.
Seems he agrees with the CHRC & loves the thought police as well. Nothing seems to be allowed to interfere with his election even a pro gun candidate or someone with an opinion. I had real Hope in Harper. This is so near despair politically, one wants to just do as others. Eye’s forward, just move on, nothing to see, don‘t vote, just wait for the inevitable encore of complete collapse.
This Canada is no longer free or strong. It has lost its heart with its soul kidnapped by the men of ice.

I hear ya, Rev. I’ve been thinking the same thing. I’m very, very disappointed in the CPC. I’d rather support a party that stands up for what it believes and loses, than one that pander to political correctness in an attempt to win. If they win a majority, I’m willing to give them a chance to prove themselves. If they fail, or if they don’t win a majority, tell me where I should sign up.

Ron Wood said: “WL: yes, but full 16th century Maximilian armour, while stylish, is uncomfortable on long bus rides”
Well I was thinking more of a modern one-upmanship response to criminal attack…something less defensive and more self preserving…say a Springfiiled .380 in a rib mounted kevlar holster. ;-)
