By a Whisker
I’ve been busy. Too busy to do the political calculus which lead to tonights’ 149-145 vote in favour of extending the Canadian mission in Afghanistan by two years. It is important that the Tories won the motion and important that Canada’s commitment be affirmed. However, the Tories need not have taken the risk of being defeated.
Back when the Tories were in Opposition, I wrote a lot about the need for the Tories to hold the Liberals’ proverbial feet to the fire. The Liberals are not unaware of the Tories’ minority status and they are playing their hand. This near defeat - on extending a commitment the Liberals themselves made - should be a warning to the Tories and a reminder not to make the Joe Clark mistake of forgetting how to count.
