But there is some spine left in Europe

European Union foreign ministers said Monday they have endorsed a freeze of direct financial aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian government.

“There will be no aid to [Hamas] government organizations, but we will maintain humanitarian aid,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot.

“The Palestinian people have opted for this government, so they will have to bear the consequences.”

Now, were I Hamas I would send a few wide boys to Paris to hold the Troll of Ramallahtm’s widow up by her ankles (and it would take a fair number of wide boys) until the billion or so that Arafat skimmed shook lose. But as a gesture it is encouraging to see that even the EU is capable of recognizing terrorists even when they are elected. And it is even better to see it recognize that cutting off the money is the only effective means of bringing Hamas to the table.
