The United Nations, meanwhile, announced that it has moved some of its observers in south Lebanon to safer positions following an Israeli airstrike Tuesday that killed four unarmed observers from the U.N. Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) at a post in Khiyam, located in the eastern border region. Earlier, a U.N. peacekeeper was wounded by Hezbollah small-arms fire at a nearby U.N. post. Both posts were subsequently vacated. The latest move withdraws observers from two more U.N. bases in the area. In all, about 50 observers from UNTSO — the first U.N. peacekeeping mission, dating from the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 — are moving into 40 positions held by the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said Milos Strugar, a UNIFIL spokesman. UNIFIL, which has nearly 2,000 troops in south Lebanon, said it was maintaining all of its positions.
