Arrrgh….

Somali pirates have already earned more than £20m in ransom payments this year, and individual ships have recently been fetching millions of dollars each. At least a dozen vessels and more than 250 international crew members are being held hostage. Most of the ships are anchored near the fishing village of Eyl, high on Somalia’s Indian Ocean coast, including the Ukrainian-owned MV Faina, which is carrying 33 Russian-made tanks. guardian

Looks like that ransom thing is working out well.

One would think that the combined navies of the world would be able to stop the pirates or at least convoy the ships. I suppose it is too much to ask for a Hornbloweresque character to actually sail a well armed naval vessel into the pirate cove and simply shoot several hundred of them.

And planes. I hear there are planes not too terribly far away. Here’s a thought: if you see a speedboat full of armed men offshore for no good reason you use those cannon things and sink it. Do that a few times and the “pirates” will think several times before venturing out. With planes you can mark off an exclusion zone and simply sink any unauthorized vessels within that zone.

(And sure, by all means put out leaflets, explaining what you are doing. Although I would do that after the task force went into to shoot up the pirates at their base.)

Update: Another approach.

I heard somewhere today, I think it was on the radio, that the US navy wasn’t going in to re capture the tanker because any captives (pirate) would have to be brought on board said US navy vessel (sovereign US territory) and would be subject to prosecution under US laws. Court appointed attorneys and unlimited appeals anybody?

I say they should hit it with a low-yield nuke. It’s out in the middle of the ocean so casualties will be minimal. The force/heat of the blast would evaporate all of the oil so there wouldn’t be any worry about a Valdeze-like spill. The pirates themselves and anyone else considering similar actions would be sent a very, very, clear message.

They’d only have to do it once…

Well richard – it is worse than that. The UK has advised it’s Navy that shooting them would violate their Human rights. Seriously. The Sun really has set upon the British Empire.

The only Navy there that has acted has been the French and they actually went ashore and got and shot a few before taking them back to France for trial. T

he Russians are there and hopefully their armed forces are less inclined to regard the Geneva Convention (given their tanks aboard a Ukrainian freighter) than the other risk adversive whimps.

Now this last Oil Tanker seized owned by the Saudis might produce some interesting scenarios as they are also not known for adherence to Jenneifer Lynch’s view of persecution!
