A picture worth…

Bouquets of Gray posts a series of really revolting pictures. He asks, ” Does Ezra’s freedom to publish controversial images extend to these?” The answer is, and should be, yes. Because merely describing the phots as “pictures of prisoner abuse” does not even begin to convey the unpleasantness of these particular photos. Just as “blasphemous cartoons” radically overstates the offensiveness of the Danish cartoons.

The whole point of a free press is to publish and let the reader decide.

Update: Apparently these pics are being shown on CNN….Which has yet to show the Danish cartoons.

A friend of mine made an interesting observation about the contradiction. He said that the paternalistic way we hold ourselves ( the West ) to a higher standard ( of self examination in this case ) than other countries does them no favours.

Yup…

As long as we take the culturally relative position that stoning people to death or encouraging suicide bombers is just fine for theem we are, by implication, saying “Because they don’t know any better/are children/are incapable of democracy.” This sort of inherentism characterizes much of the discussion of Islamic nations and people. It is the prejudice of privilege and, as the lefties worry about the acute sensitivity of the Arab street, they are demonstrating their incapacity to treat the Muslim world as equal.

Sorry - but Ezra is no Champion of Free Speech.
Isn’t he suing like over 100 people in his old riding merely for signign a petition asking how much money he got for letting Stephen Harper parachute into the riding he was a candidate in
