How very European, not to say French, of him. This would certainly place the Liberal Party on the griddle having committed the troops in the first place. In Quebec, where there is a very Euro attitude towards what soldiers are supposed to do - sing Kumaya, build schools, get blown up - the idea that the Canadian army might actually be hunting down and shooting Taliban is just too horrible to contemplate.

In the rest of Canada? hard to say. There are certainly the traditional anti-war types who follow the Euro line; but there are also a lot of Anglo Canadians who are proud of our soldiers and convinced that before you can “reconstruct” you have to create security. Security which is threatened by the neighbourhood Taliban. Some of these war mongering Canadians go so far as to suggest that shooting a goodly number of these Taliban is a good idea.

Shocking.

Which, of course, puts M. Dion right where the BQ want him, between a rock and a hard place. Does he pander in Quebec? Or does he try to trim a bit and acknowledge that the former Liberal government sent the army to, er, fight.
