As I wrote this I thought, “I bet someone is going to point out that there were no laptops or cellphones”. In fact cellphones of stunning size and heft were about 17 years ago as were rudimentary laptops (I had a 286 laptop). However, your point that these were not typically in the classroom is likely correct.

Text books, on the other hand can be tossed.

The point, of course, is not to drop the gunman with a well placed throw but rather to distract and disorient him while a full on swarm takes place.

And my broader point is that rather than the wailing and gnashing of teeth which arrives every year, why not organize a cross country teach in on emergency skills and responses for women and men so that the next time some murderous savage pops into class the people have a fighting chance.

A cellphone, eh? A laptop? It’s risky enough Monday-morning QBing the thing 17 years down the line – risky enough to suggest they’d do it the same way if they had it to do over again, or that they have no problem “living with themselves.” You might at least arm them with non-anachronistic classroom technology in your little scenario.
