203-Passed!

“P-203 passed, nearly unanimously” says a pal on the floor.
The vote is important and the magnitude more important. It had to be a clear message and it was.
OK PMO, balls in your Court.
Update: Stephen Taylor reports that the Minister of Justice, Rob Nicholson, voted in favour of P-203. And given that the resolution passed by 90% of the votes cast it is a pretty good bet that most of the MPs in attendance voted in favour of the Free Speech Resolution as well.
We’re winning.

Yes. Let’s hope there are “balls” in the PMO!!
There are plenty of balls in the PMO. The trick is to figure out which balls are in which mouth.
How interesting. I just listened to the 6:00 pm news on CBC radio. The last item at seconds before 6:30 was about a Conservative Party resolution that “could open up the abortion debate again”. No mention of the Section 13 resolution. You’d think they’d be concerned about freedom speech, wouldn’t you? Maybe it doesn’t have as much potential anti-Conservative Party traction as the abortion issue would. I’m absolutely convinced that the potential for anti-Conservative spin is a primary criteria used by CBC to decide what stories they will cover. But that’s just me.
We can hope but no dancing after 11 pm.
I live in Oak Bay…no dancing after 8:00 PM.
Louise, I think you are dead right. there is very little traction in the repeal of 13 because the CHRC have been so ham fisted (if not outright illegal) in its enforcement.
Which makes the repeal of s. 13 a virtually costless move on the part of the CPC. Yes, the Jackal will howl and Iggy might take a cue from that howl; but no one will care.
I don’t actually have a beer hall but am bald and will be raising a Stella or three to the end of s.13.
Justice Minister Rob Nicolson voted in favour of the resolution.
Feet will be held to the fire and, with a little luck, the overbroad, no defence possible, s. 13 will be off the books.
With it, with a bit more luck, will go the people who created a cowboy culture with no rules.
The Free Speech Resolution is a huge step forward in the destruction of a clandestine and out of control branch of government whose abuse of process was far worse than the loony ravings of the dimwits it prosecuted.
The Jackal will howl, Lucy will moan, BCL will burn his bearings with the spin; but in the end all Canadians will be better off without government regulation of speech.
(And thank you for the rest of this reporting Dawg. It is good to read a bit of counter spin out of what is, by definition, a highly partisan event.)
Not so sure….....
From the floor:
“When one of the people from the riding association rose to speak to the resolution on the floor, not only was there wild applause but he received a standing ovation.
Pretty much everyone (we’re talking the whole room) stood up and applauded. ”
This wasn’t just a resolution that passed. This was something very close to the heart for most of the convention delegates. This was their freedom they were voted on.
Those delegates small in total numbers perhaps (2500-300o) represent a very large percentage of Canadians.
Don’t sell this little victory short!
Okay. It took me a few moments to figure out what you were talking about, Blazing. Now I’m giggling.
The people have spoken.
Excellent news.
” Stephen Taylor reports that the Minister of Justice, Rob Nicholson, voted in favour of P-203.”
Don’t know if they showed it, but when it passed Stephen had both hands up in the air.
As the the “Re-open abortion debate” question it would be the violence against unborn resolution. If a pregnant woman was harmed and something happened during the crime to harm the fetus, additional charges could be filed.
Tag line for the battle:
Hate speech laws – Hitler’s legal noose for lynching malcontents.
Talk about a straw man. When was the last time anyone actually supported – let alone went to the wall – over this issue?
So Nicholson isn’t a completely worthless teat…just an inept boob who defends section 13 outside the lomelight and votes against it when the public is watching.
Harper must love the rubber stamp he has installed in the justice ministry….every one an a while it will actually rubber stamp something the membership want.
