A new verb from the Independent

Stephanie Tunmore, a Greenpeace campaigner, said that there were “lively debates going on” behind closed doors yesterday. She added: “This is a summary of a very big report which will go to policy makers. It is very important to attach the right levels of certainty. In a room of 400 people, goring through a document line by line takes time.” the independent

Deranged Lunatic’s take

As Robert McLelland has once again linked me up a quick note: I am obviously delighted that the British sailors were released. And this may very well count as a victory for diplomacy which is a good thing.

There are, however, several versions of a diplomatic solution and we do not, at this point, know which obtained in this situation. There is the “You have two days to hand over our soldiers unconditionally or we will consider ourselves at war with Iran.” version. And there is the, “You let our guys go and a couple of weeks from now we’ll let your guys go.”

While the Kumbayaists are high fiving this triumph of diplomacy, it is not at all obvious what version of that dark art this was. Until we know that, and I suspect part of the deal was non-disclosure, it is impossible to leap to the conclusion that this was either a threat or a capitulation. I am hoping the former but I fear it may have been the latter.
