Further to Mr. George

Franz Rosenzweig, that most Jewish connoisseur of Christianity, believed that the Church of Peter (Rome) and the Church of Paul (Protestantism) would yield place to the Church of John (Orthodoxy) - that the churches of works and faith would be transcended by the church of love. If Europe has a future, it lies in an ecumenical alliance of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and at least some elements of Anglicanism. spengler

Which is why I look forrward to Mr. George’s next installment.

Where have I seen this before

Britain’s crisis with Iran deepened last night after Tehran justified seizing 15 British servicemen by claiming that they had strayed into Iranian territorial waters “illegally”. times of london

The fracas last summer with Hezbollah, Iran’s catspaw in Lebanon, began in much the same way.

One can only hope that, in the event that Iran is crazy enough to hold the British Marines hostage, England will have the courage to respond “disproportionately”. A surge of British forces into Bushehr might suggest to Iran that the detention of Her Majesty’s Marines is an extremely bad idea.

Of course I would applaud such a surge even without the British captives simply to underscore the world’s disapproval of Iran’s nuclear program and its ongoing support for terrorism - Shi’ite and Sunni - throughout the region. But having such an easy pretext must be awfully tempting. There are, after all, three American carrier groups in striking distance and more than sufficient manpower to take the port.

Update: This means War.

The decision to kidnap the sailors was reached after a report submitted to Iran’s ground forces commander warned that information on the activities of the Revolutionary Guards and the “Al-Quds Force” in Iraq was being leaked to British and American intelligence agencies following the arrest of senior “Al-Quds Force” officers by US troops in northern Iraq. ynet

If this is true then there is little question that the Marine will either be returned of England, and America, will be at war with Iran.

Harper’s idea of just giving money to parents to do with as they please is nothing but a shirking of responsibility as a democratically elected government to ensure that our tax dollars are spent properly. jason cherniak

It is unlikely that Cherniak is actually as dumb as this sounds. Law degree and all that. So I have to think he believes it.

In which case he pretty much underscores the difference between the Liberal and liberal conceptions of the world. For Jason the idea is that people, parents in this case, cannot be trusted to spend money wisely on their children. (I personally bought beer and, well, food, with today’s $100.00 for Max. Max likes beer.)

For us small “l” liberals the idea that government has anything whatsoever to do with raising our children is anathema. If the Feds want to send money for whatever inscrutable reason, I’ll take it; but save me from the idea that government knows anything, much less, “best” about my kids.

Jason, perhaps because he’s single and not blessed with children, seems to be under the impression that the feds and their union daycare buddies know best. It never occurs to the man to wonder if this is a paradigm to be supported or one to be questioned at its very foundation. Because that foundation is that kids do just fine without their parents. That daycare workers - well, union daycare workers - are really a positive substitute for Mum. Mum+ as it were.

The sheer implausibility of that position is what makes me wonder if Cherniak wasn’t a legacy to some poor law school. Seriously, are there people who really believe this??
