But there is some spine left in Europe

European Union foreign ministers said Monday they have endorsed a freeze of direct financial aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian government.

“There will be no aid to [Hamas] government organizations, but we will maintain humanitarian aid,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot.

“The Palestinian people have opted for this government, so they will have to bear the consequences.”

Now, were I Hamas I would send a few wide boys to Paris to hold the Troll of Ramallahtm’s widow up by her ankles (and it would take a fair number of wide boys) until the billion or so that Arafat skimmed shook lose. But as a gesture it is encouraging to see that even the EU is capable of recognizing terrorists even when they are elected. And it is even better to see it recognize that cutting off the money is the only effective means of bringing Hamas to the table.

The mind reels

Matthias, based in Shanghai, has been chasing pirates and counterfeiters on behalf of Rouse clients for eight years. She has tracked down and brought to heel the makers of unlicensed Beanie Babies and Teletubbies. The latter were special fakes since – besides looking cuddly and weird – they also sang Spice Girl songs. “That was a good example of double-infringement because they infringed the BBC’s Teletubby brand and the Spice Girls,” she says.

In a perverse way I really, really, really want Teletubbie which sang Spice Grils songs. Until I read this article I didn’t realize that. Thank you CBC.

Grit Beauty Parade

How lucky the Alberta Liberal is. Not a member elected but first up for the Canadian Idol/Who, me, a Liberal Beauty contest. Calgary Grit was there and is well worth reading. here he is on Hedy Fry:

Hedy Fry: Gave us a nice history of the Liberal Pary and talked a lot about Canada. What she did not talk about was Hedy Fry, which is probably a wise move. She ended by saying she would be “bold and daring” - I’m not sure whether to be inspired or afraid.

Adieu

French President Jacques Chirac has announced that the new youth employment law that sparked weeks of sometimes violent protests will be scrapped.

He said it would be replaced by other measures to tackle youth unemployment.
bbc

Welcome to the third world France. There is nothing so delightful than to see real people power standing in front of the tide. A million Canutes. And, having spines of fois gras the group of crooks passing themselves off as the French government has listened to the “French street” seeth and, lest offence is taken, scuttered for shelter.

Now it was not as if the proposed reforms to French labour law were going to create a free market or anything that radical. Mais non. They were a modest attempt to improve the already slight possibility that the hordes of unemployed young rench people might be hired.

So, time for the Canadian government to get serious about recruiting young, bright, often bilingual, French people who are smart enough to realize France has lost the capacity to create her own future. Get those immigration offices open. Look for college grads. Just don’t expect them to have had any, er, job experience.
