Click Fraud and the Net
Excellent article in Wired on the perils of click fraud. Yes, there are people who click on the ads you see below and, no kidding, they are doing it to enrich themselves…Who would have thunk it?
In fact the entire click based advertising model is flawed at a more basic level: it forces people to leave the site they are interested in to see ads which are only marginally interesting. This is not news to Google and there are entire threads on webmasters’ sites devoted to the art of blending ads so users have no idea what they click is an ad.
Click fraud is the dark side of pay per click; but it is not what will kill it. What will kill it is the fact that the only people who apparently click on ads are brand new to the net. Surf for six months and you cease seeing the ads. Get a couple of extensions for Firefox and your really don’t see them because they are killed at source. Eventually, webbmasters and bbloggers are going to begin to wonder why they are handing over 20% of their web real estate for $5.00 a month. I know I do.
There is a better way and I am working on it….stay tuned
